The Kasbah is an abandoned castle located in southern Morocco. Karou and the rebel chimaera make it their base.

Description[]

The kasbah is a castle built of earth, one of the hundreds that stud the southern reaches of Morocco where they have baked in the sun for centuries. These castles had originally been built as homes to warrior clans. They are primeval fortresses, proud, red, and tall, with crenelations and arcane Berber patterns etched on the high, smooth walls. It has been left to "the storks and scorpions."[1] The kasbah looks like a very big sandcastle. It's monumental, an entire town, with lanes plazas, neighborhoods, a caravansary, granary, and palace. It's echoing and empty. There's a flagstone courtyard, mud walls, and peaked roofs jutting overhead. It's also gorgeous with embellished scrollwork iron window grilles, carved wood, jewel mosaics, soaring Moorish arches, jade-green roof tiles, and white plaster lacework. An arcaded gallery faces the main gate.

It's also collapsing into ruin. In some areas, the roofs have fallen in entirely and several towers have been reduced to a single standing corner. Staircases lead nowhere, doors open onto four-story plunges, towering arches loom precariously and are riven with cracks. The lanes are in terrible repair. Karou's room is at the highest point in the palace with a wide, walled court below. She picked it because it has an iron crossbar that allows her to lock out Thiago. Behind the great hall they create a space for a group of chickens in a small courtyard. The guardhouse is a half-razed structure where Thiago holds court with his captains.

Above and behind the kasbah are the Atlas Mountains, which is where the portal Razgut showed Karou is. This is one of the main reasons Karou picks it for their base, as it provides somewhat easy access to Eretz. Before and below the kasbah the earth rolls down a slope of scree and scrub toward the distant Sahara desert. It's a bleak vista. A giant Pit is made to contain the empty bodies of chimaera as their souls are gleaned so Karou can resurrect them in new bodies. The kasbah is near the cities Ourzazate and Agdiz.
